Each character is based on one of the five Chinese metaphysical elements described on the About Xanadu page: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Each character has a secret which if revealed would destroy him or her. To simulate the traditional interactions between the elements, each character tells his or her secret to the character with a controlling element. These relationships are detailed in the diagram below.

Here is an overview of Mongol beliefs and a whole bunch of spells for players to use that fit this world better than the spell list provided in the game system .

Baiju Gan

Baiju Gan is a Mongol and the Overseer of Works whose duties include allocating workers to tasks, ensuring workers complete their duties on time and to the required standard and dealing with disputes and complaints among the workers.

Sung Il Tran

Sung Il Tran is a Korean who took up a position as military attache before negotiatiuons between the Great Khan and the Koreans broke down. His position in the current project is Commander of One Thousand, the military commander of the forces devoted to the security of the project which consists of a battalion of infantry, archers and cavarly.

Tumen Subei

Tumen Subei is a Mongol Shaman appointed to this project to manage the spiritual resources of the summer palace. For a Mongol, there are the spirits not only of one's ancestors but of the trees, the winds, the mountains and the waters to keep happy if they are to continue to support the project.

Mei-Lan-Dai

Mei is the Chief Of Gardeners and an accomplished and recognised authority in the art of shaping wilderness in beautiful and regular gardens to ease the minds and the souls of all those who visit them. She was chosen by the Great Khan Kubilai himself to create the gardens for his summer palace.

Xiao Lin-Yu

Lin-Yu is the Principle Architect who created the palace and garden design chosen from hundreds by the Great Khan personally to be the shape of his summer palace. Lin-Yu is responsibile for quality of the design in terms of functionalty, decoration and useability.
