The Winds Of Change (Part I)

Date Played: 29 September 2001

Game Date: Monday 5 March 2001

Malachi is contacted by Antonio, a bodyguard of Bruno Giotti, a major Mafia figure in Washington, DC, and rumored to be the one who provided much of the cell's equipment. Giotti wants to see him for lunch at Castelli's Restaurant and after being patted down by Antonio, Giotti invites Malachi to lunch. Malachi listens as Giotto outlines the favor he requires of Malachi in return for all Giotti has given him. He needs the evidence against Carlos Hernandez, a gun-running arrested at the Mexican border, to disappear within 24 hours. Giotti says he'll be disappointed if Malachi lets him down.

Flex and Riggs are helicoptered high into the Rocky Mountains of Oregon. The trees and the snow would be beautiful if there purpose were not so dangerous or deadly. Their mission is to assassinate Emma Coloris in her secluded psychic research centre. They trudge through the winter forest under packs heavy with equipment. Flex catches Riggs looking at her as something more than partner in this mission. She wonders whether his mind is one the job at hand.

Angela is called into the office of Tom Donnelly, her supervisor who removed her from all sensitive surveillance missions for seeing "something strange". Barely concealing his contempt for her, Donnelly tells Angela that Richard Davies, the Director of National Security, has asked specifically for Angela to investigate an assassination threat he has received. Donnelly tells her he has put together a team and Angela should keep out of their way. If Angela screws up in any way, says Donnelly, he'll bury her. A note of her desk invites her to meet them after lunch.

Davenport is called by Alisa. She has a job for him and must meet her after lunch at Pallas Consulting. Here, he meets Major Claude Streiber, Willy Anderson and Portia de Costa. Aegis believes the power source is a Grey flying disk is being stored here. The mission is to infiltrate and either capture or destroy the power source. The planning session begins.

Richard Davies, in his role as a member of Aegis Prime, contacts Osbourne for coffee. He asks Osbourne for his opinions on the direction Aegis should take to follow up the victory at Vickersburg. Satisfied with Osbourne's answers, he invites Osbourne to a meeting tonight. Davies says he'll send his driver for him at 7.30pm.

Malachi's plan is a simple one. The FBI evidence locker takes up an entire floor under the Hoover Building. Malachi phones in a bomb threat using the correct coded words to ensure that the FBI takes it seriously and evacuates the building. Just before the alarms sound, he signs into the evidence locker and opens the evidence files of several cases. The evacuation begins and Malachi packs the evidence for the Hernandes case into the wrong container. Misfiled information has as good as vanished. He turns to go and is confronted by a security guard with a pistol and John Sandaval, who informs him he's under arrest for tampering with evidence. However, says Sandaval, the situation can be put to rights if Malachi does a small job for the secret organization Sandaval works for. Malachi keeps his job and the evidence stays misfiled if within 24 hours Malachi assassinates Richard Davies.

Flex and Riggs are within 100 metres of the research facility. There is a guard just within the tree line standing between them and the perimeter fence. Riggs sneaks up behind the guard, draws his knife and pounces. Unexpectedly, the guard spins, punches Riggs in the face felling him. They wrestle and, as Flex coldly watches on, the guard slowly sinks a bayonet into Riggs' body. Riggs shudders and dies. Flex continues with the mission.

Angela meets with Laura Levin, Matt Johnson and Chuck Williams, the surveillance team put together by Donnelly to protect Davies. Laura identifies two suspects: Alisa St James, a woman running a business as a front to other undiscovered activities who is having a relationship with Davies, and Vladimir Ivanov, an ex-KGB assassin known to have arrived in Washington, DC two days ago. Levin has had Davies under surveillance since he started the affair with Alisa eight months ago. Laura assigns Matt to watch Alisa, Chuck to find and watch Ivanov and Angela to stay at HQ to monitor and coordinate communication. Laura assigns herself to watch Davies.

Streiber's team, including Davenport, are helicoptered to near the Black Book base in South Carolina. The base is similar in style to the base at Vickersburg. Portia is set on over-watch and is tasked to keep the hangar doors clear. The rest skirt the tree line and enter through the escape hatch at the rear of the facility. Quietly, they move through the darkened corridors and up the stairs to the equipment deck. They find nothing unusual on the equipment deck floor and so approach the only structure on the floor, a closed, windowless office at one end.

Osbourne, picked up at 7.30pm exactly, rides in Davies car to an office building in the centre of Washington. He is shown up to the seventh floor and past the two Air Force security guards into an operations room. Davies introduces him to the other members of Aegis Prime, including William Rockefeller, Admiral Morgan Masterton and General John Houston. The screens in the operations room are tracking a number of missions, including two agents in the Rocky Mountains of Oregon and a team of four entering a Black Book base in South Carolina. Davies calls the meeting to order and they debate the question of whether to decentralize Aegis or to follow up on recent gains made against the Black Book. The vote is split four in favor or reorganization and four against. The room looks at Osbourne to cast the deciding vote. Osbourne votes with Davies to take the battle to the Black Book.

Malachi conceives a plan to fake Davies and his own deaths in a staged assassination attempt and, using Hermes, send a message to Osbourne, Davies and others. He names a Joseph Amatore's dead letter drop and a time to reply by if they agree with the plan.

Flex skirts to the other side of the complex but the guards are out looking for her. She dodges several of them before deciding that, at this time, the mission is unachievable. She heads towards the pickup point vowing to kill Coloris someday.

Angela is uncomfortable with her inactive role and decides to watch Davies as well. She reroutes all communications from Laura's team to her van and sets out. Parking well back, she can see both the entrance to the office block where Davies is conducting a meeting and the car in which Laura watches for Davies. Chuck cannot find Ivanov. Matt watches Alisa eating ice-cream in front of the television. Her intuition tells her that Davies has dumped Alisa.

Davenport, Streiber and Anderson warily approach the office. Neither Streiber or Anderson seem to notice the overwhelming sense of dread with fills Davenport the closer he approaches. He backs away as Streiber opens the office door. Some kind of psychic attack floors Streiber and kills Anderson outright. Streiber, out of his mind with fear, cowers in a corner as Davenport watches the office through the sights of his submachine gun. Around the door frame, the head of a Grey slowly emerges. Davenport fires a short burst into the head, which virtually disintegrates. He enters the room and finds nothing but a camp bed and tins of Grey food. Davenport radios for extraction.

Osbourne receives Malachi's message and informs the meeting. They decide to go along with Malachi's plan or kill him if it looks like going wrong at any point. The meeting is closed and preparations begin. Osbourne accepts Davies offer of a lift home.

Osbourne and Davies emerge from the lobby onto the street. Angela photographs Laura getting out of her car, walking across the road and pulling a pistol on Davies. Osbourne jumps in front of Davies, drawing his own pistol. Laura's shot narrowly misses Osbourne but Osbourne shot is dead on target. As Laura falls to the road, he turns to find Davies dead on the sidewalk, killed by a bullet to the head.

The sound of gunfire brings the Black Book base guards looking for Davenport, who locks himself in the office, praying the extraction team arrives in time. Suddenly, the room outside the office is filled with the noise and screaming of a pitched gun battle. The gunfire stops and Davenport notices the door handle slowly turning. The door begins to open. Davenport stands behind it and kicks the door into whoever is opening it. Machine gun fire through the door catches Davenport and he falls, unconscious.

Osbourne keeps the appointment with Malachi and updates him on the situation. He, Malachi and Angela kidnap Sandaval from his apartment and throw him in a sealed room in the cell's Civil Defence shelter.

Flex arrives back in Washington and Davenport wakes in Bethesda Military Hospital to learn of Davies assassination.

Angela confronts Donnelly with photographic proof that the head of the team he selected to protect Davies killed him. He cowers in fear.
