Worth A Tip?
flames of war Archive
Played the first game of what will hopefully become a long running Flames of War campaign on Friday night. The campaign is basically the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. There’s four of us playing: two playing the Axis forces whether Italian or German, one playing the British and I’m playing the US army led by the lunatic General George S. Patton.
What we did on Friday night was the initial pre-invasion preparatory raids with the aim of securing objectives in order to make the beach landings easier when we fight them out on the table top. If we were […]
I’ve finally finished painting my 15mm US Rangers battalion for Flames of War and it’s time to show them off. The concept is that these guys are from the 1st Ranger Battalion in Italy 1943-4.
I wanted a different look for the Rangers as opposed to my 82nd Airborne company in Normandy (one of my other Flames of War armies) so they traipsing through the rubble of a bombed out town. I’m about 80% happy with the results. I would have liked to have put more bits of junk in the rubble such as bathtubs, furniture, bits of cars, etc […]
The group I wargame with has been thinking for some time about how to conduct a campaign where each victory or defeat along the way has a definite outcome and effect on subsequent battles. Whereas most miniature wargames campaign systems are rather abstract in their effects and victory seems usually to influence nothing more than the ability to raise an army, we wanted something more modern, something that shows better the ebb and flow of mecanised warfare.
To this end, I developed a campaign scenario for the D-Day landing on Utah Beach which we’ll play soon using the Flames of […]
I need a quick sanity check on these Flames of War wargaming figures. They are meant to represent US Rangers moving through a bombed out and well fought over town, such as Cisterna, in northern Italy in 1943 or 1944.
I’m not sure I’ve got the bases right, though. Have a look and let me know what you think. Do they look OK? What can I do to improve them?
(The figures themselves look pretty poor close up like this but look fine when you apply the ‘two-foot‘ rule.)
