Ten Years Later

It's now early spring 1957, ten years since Johnny Rocco battled Vincenzo Giuliani for control of Los Angeles, and what has happened?

Then District Attorney John G. Jones, ran for mayor in November of that years and won by a landslide. many commentators likened it to the victory of mayor Robert Anderson twelve years before. After his victory, he married Joan Sternwood before the Christmas of that year and most people linked this to the new wave of prosperity that has swept the city and the county.

However, 1948 saw tragedy hit the combined Jones/Sterwood clan. Within the first three months of that year, Horace Sternwood health finally failed and he died in his sleep. Vivian, whose wild lifestyle and lurid stories of the LA underworld entertained many through the social pages and cheaper magazines, lost control of her car after a night of heavy drinking and plunged off the cliffs into the ocean near the Palos Verdes hills.

Johnny Rocco, having learned many lessons during his extended stay in Mexico, ruled Los Angeles firmly but discretely. Any member of his gang who makes apublic spectacle of himself or draws attention to Rocco's activities is dealt with harshly. Sometime during the first years of the 1950s, he branches away from the traditional mob rackets of gambling and vice into more legitimate areas such as transportation, stevedoring and the teamsters.

A few people turn up for the funeral of Jeff Galloway: Gabi, Jack, Benny and Norma as well as Johnny Rocco, at a discrete distance.

Jack calls in the painters and has the name of Galloway removed from the office door. The lettering now reads Jack Ryan and Associates, Private Detectives. People in the know understand that if the job is dirty or needs to be done quietly, they have someone they can turn to -- for the right price.

Benny and Norma settle down outside of LA in the hills around Pasedena and Orange County. They are often seen, however, in town on Saturday nights whenever a big show is in town. Benny keeps in touch with the detective agency to keep up his income stream.

Gabi is Jack's associate. Jack has asked her several times whether she wants her name added to the door. She has always politely refused.

It took several years to find out what became of Nate. He seemed to just disappear and Kacj, Gabi and Benny feared the worst. Eventually he turned up in San Francisco running fishing and other tours for the ever-growing 'artistic' subsection of the community down there.

But still the question remains:

Do the damned cry?
