A Bit of a Grab Bag

I think I’ve come to terms with not posting the rest of the holiday impressions here. It’s been almost a month since we’ve been back and the fact that I’ve not gotten round to it yet suggests that I probably wont. Yes, I’m lazy. Sue me.

There’s a couple of things to note this time:

First, it is our first Mothers’ Day since our girls, Charlotte and Marianne, were born and died is fast approaching. Also, this weekend marks the six month anniversary of the girls’ birth. We’re not really sure how to approach these events. There seems to be two options which exist at the extremes of a continuum. Do we celebrate the brief lives of our beautiful little babies? Do we wallow in our ever-present grief? One of these seems much easier to do than the other. Suffice it to say, I think we’ll be isolating ourselves from the world from Friday night until Monday morning.

Next, I took part in a three-hour yoga workshop last weekend. Having never attempted subcontinental stretching exercises before, I was intrigued to see what all the fuss was about. My body and limbs should be able to bend at the joints, apparently. I never knew. Far from being gentle breathing exercises, this was a pretty intense workout moving from yoga posture to yoga posture concentrating on breathing correctly – another thing I figured would be easy since I’ve been breathing for some time now. I liked it a lot but perhaps not as much as I enjoyed tai chi. Will I be back? Probably – at least I can find a tai chi school I like.

Finally, the ACA is looking at a competition format for historical swordplay. We’ve been testing out the draft competition over the last two weeks. During the first week, I noticed that once we were done with out warm-up exercises and into the ring, so to speak, all technique went out the window and we were either just bashing each other (safely) or running away from the blows. This week, we have gathered our collective heads and the bouts were much more like fencing matches. There was plenty of technique, footwork and – most importantly – style.

That’s about it for today. I’ll still attempt to post some of the holiday but don’t expect it.
